Freedom of movement made easier by social security coordination
Coordination of social security systems
Today, MEPs voted in favour of better coordination of social security systems in the EU. The Greens/EFA welcome better cooperation amongst Member States on social protection, which will ensure that workers’ rights are respected across the EU. Workers will be able to get the entitlements they acquired in a Member State, such as unemployment benefits and pensions, no matter where they settle in the EU.
Gordan Bosanac, Greens/EFA shadow on the file, comments:
“Freedom of movement has just gotten easier. After 10 years of negotiations, citizens will be able to benefit from their acquired social security rights anywhere they choose to work or live in the EU.
“This revision is particularly important for the EU’s 14 million mobile workers, who will clearly know which Member State is responsible for their social security rights and will benefit from the same rights as locals.”
