Greens/EFA welcome Court ruling on Minimum Wage Directive
Today, the Court of Justice of the European Union has confirmed the legal validity of the EU Minimum Wage Directive. While some articles were annulled, the core of the Directive remains intact.
Terry Reintke, Greens/EFA Co-President, comments:
“We welcome the Court's confirmation of the legal validity of the EU Minimum Wage Directive, especially its recognition of all measures linked to collective bargaining. This Directive has already proven its positive impact for Europeans: between 2024 and 2025, gross statutory minimum wages increased in nearly all Member States that enforce them. This ruling proves the importance of continuing work on European legislation to protect workers and fight against inequalities. With the legal certainty confirmed, Member States should not drag their feet and move swiftly towards the full implementation of the Directive. We need a social Europe.”
Bas Eickhout, Greens/EFA Co-President, comments:
"The Greens/EFA have long campaigned for an EU-wide minimum wage as an essential tool to bring millions of people out of poverty. This is a clear signal to the Commission: it should keep raising the bar on social and labour rights. The Commission should support the full implementation of the Directive by the Member States and provide clear criteria to prove that it is standing on the side of millions of Europeans who are looking to the EU for fairer pay.”
