Rule of law – Hungary

The case of MEP Ilaria Salis.

The European Parliament's Legal Affairs Committee has just rejected the request to waive the immunity of Italian MEP Ilaria Salis, who has been the target of repeated attacks by Viktor Orbán and his government.

The European Parliament will vote on the matter during its next session, which will take place in Strasbourg from 6 to 9 October.

Statement by David CORMAND, member of the Committee on Legal Affairs in charge of the case for the Greens/EFA group:

"By refusing to waive the immunity of MEP Ilaria Salis, the Committee on Legal Affairs reaffirms not only the inviolability of every citizen's right to a fair trial, but also the primacy of democracy and the rule of law."

"The lack of action by the Commission and the Council with regard to Hungary, which is no longer a fully fledged democracy and has, for years, been turning into an autocratic regime, endangers the EU and the rights of its citizens.”
