EU must play more proactive role in resolving Ukrainian crisis
The European Parliament today adopted a resolution on the situation in Ukraine. Commenting after the vote, Greens/EFA co-president Rebecca Harms said:
"The European Parliament today made a clear appeal for a peaceful and political solution in Ukraine and for the EU to do all in its power to ensure this. The use of violence must be stopped and all imprisoned demonstrators released. An interim government must be installed without delay, with a view to preparing new elections.
"MEPs supported the call for a permanent EP observation mission in Ukraine; this will help prevent further escalation of the situation and play a role in facilitating dialogue between the different sides. The EU must put pressure on the Ukrainian government and the EP has today called for targeted sanctions against the regime and its financial backers, notably visa restrictions and restrictions on capital flows. There is also a need to strengthen efforts to combat money laundering and tax avoidance in European financial institutions by Ukrainian businesses and businesspeople."
