European Day of Languages

This year on the European Day of Languages EFA MEPs, Francois Alfonsi and Lydie Massard attended an event hosted by the Intergroup on Traditional Minorities, National Communities and Languages.

The event took place at the Museum of European History in Brussels, MEPs from the intergroup from all groups posed with dictionaries of their respective languages.

The spotlight particularly was on the minority languages with a special focus on Catalan, Galician and Basque which are on the road to becoming official EU languages and being represented in the European institutions.

Francois Alfonsi, Co-chair of the intergroup intervened to defend minority languages and their rights, as well as the importance of keeping the linguist diversity of Europe alive.

The possibility of Catalan, Basque and Galician is thanks to the dedication and work of EFA MEPs who have defended and fought to guarantee the rights and the preservation of minority languages for years, as it is one of the EFA core values.

This also marked the first official event for the new addition to the EFA Group, Brittany MEP Lydie Massard, who became elected last week after Yannick Jadot Green MEP was elected to the French Senate. Lydie will officially take possession of her seat during next week’s Strasbourg Plenary session.
