European Parliament stands up for the rule of law and future generations

MFF

"The Council's vision for the MFF does not match the scope of the challenges before us. The reductions in grants over loans does not go far enough to support the long term needs of the recovery. Countries that have chosen frugality over solidarity do so at the expense of European unity. It is now up to the European Parliament to stand up for the rule of law and to invest in future generations", says Philippe Lamberts, co-President of the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament.

Agreement comes at a high price

EU Summit

"In exchange for a smaller recovery fund and higher rebates the rule of law mechanism was significantly watered down. The rule of law conditionality remains too fuzzy to constitute a real lever to bring Member States to respect what they signed up for when becoming members" says Philippe Lamberts, Co-President of the Greens/EFA group.

A Green/EFA contribution to a future EU Recovery Fund

On the 23 April, EU Leaders tasked the Commission to work on a proposal to set up a Recovery Fund targeted towards the sectors and geographical parts of Europe most affected by the pandemic crisis. In this perspective, the Greens/EFA Group in the European Parliament aims to contribute to this key debate, by proposing to integrate a democratically controlled grant-based recovery fund in the MFF, which would issue common bonds to fund the economic recovery post COVID-19.
