LGBT Rights: Europe, let's move on!

30.01.2014

A Greens/EFA conference

For the first time in January 2011, the European Parliament called on the Commission to issue an EU Roadmap with concrete measures against homophobia and discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation. While such coordinated policy documents already exist for other groups (eg. EU Framework for national Roma integration strategies or the European Disability Strategy 2010-2020) a Roadmap for equality on grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity would help to protect and advance the fundamental rights of LGBT people in the work of the EU. Despite the European Parliament’s ten (!) requests for the Commission to issue such a roadmap in the last three years, the European Commission indicated it wouldn’t work on such a roadmap. The LIBE INI report "on the EU Roadmap against homophobia and discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity" sets out to describe what an ‘LGBT roadmap’ should contain to lay groundwork for the next Parliament and Commission to earnestly work on it. During this conference, the LIBE INI report "on the EU Roadmap against homophobia and discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity" will be presented and representatives of the European Commission, the European Council, NGOs, and national Green parties will discuss about the need to implement the LGBT roadmap during the next legislative period.
