Conference of Presidents in Copenhagen, today (3 June) - quote from Terry Reintke
After the Conference of Presidents (COP) met with Danish Presidency Mette Frederiksen to discuss the program of the Danish Presidency starting 1 July, Terry Reintke, Co-Chair of the Greens/EFA in the European Parliament, comments:
“We welcome today´s fruitful exchange with the Danish Presidency. We are looking forward to working together, particularly on more climate action and a proper 2040 target to bring down emissions. Climate action is security policy and economic policy. We need massive investments into renewable energies to make the EU less dependent on fossil autocrats, become the frontrunner in green technologies, create jobs and strengthen the EU´s global competitiveness. Bold climate action and the 2040 target is key for the EU´s credibility ahead of the Climate Conference in Brazil in November, and we ask the Danish Presidency to put the Green Deal high on its agenda”
Background
Yesterday, the EU Scientific Advisory Board stressed again that 90 to 95 per cent fewer CO2 emissions domestically by the year 2040 will be feasible and clearly criticised playing international carbon credits against climate action within the EU.
The Commission proposal for the EU 2040 climate target is expected for 2 July. It is supposed to shape the path to reducing CO2 emissions by 90 per cent by the year 2040 compared to 1990 levels with the aim of reaching climate neutrality by 2050.
