EUDR delay: Quote from Greens/EFA MEP Marie Toussaint
On the further delay of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) for another year, which was announced by the European Commission today, MEP Marie Toussaint, Greens/EFA shadow rapporteur on the regulation, comments:
“The Commission no longer knows how to hide the concessions made to lobbies on environmental issues. Pretending to postpone a law due to IT problems is unprecedented and an insult to all democrats. Ursula von der Leyen is sticking the middle finger to the planet.
“Every day lost in implementing the deforestation law, which was originally scheduled to come into effect on January 1, 2025, means thousands of hectares of forests destroyed and local communities sacrificed for palm oil or soy. The European Union had proudly presented this pioneering legislation; today, it looks like a colossus with feet of clay, unable to keep its most basic ecological promises. We refuse to let the Green Deal turn into a Green Delay—or worse, to see it go up in smoke, sacrificed to private interests devastating the planet.
“Receiving this news on the very same day we learn of the signing of a free trade agreement with Indonesia favoring palm oil is more than troubling. After bowing to Donald Trump, is Ursula von der Leyen ready to sacrifice the European model to all foreign whims?”
