Zimbabwe

Greens/EFA motion for a resolution

The Greens/EFA Group strongly appeals to the international community to ensure the rapid provision of substantial humanitarian aid to the people of Zimbabwe and salls on the future government of national unity to set up a neutral and independent peace and reconciliation commission with a view to promoting a national healing process that will review the crimes against humanity, torture, rape and other crimes committed in internal conflicts.

Greens/EFA motion for a resolution

The Greens/EFA Group expresses its firm condemnation of the attacks on human rights defenders in Russia, including lawyers who are representing citizens' rights, and calls on the Russian authorities at all levels protect and guarantee their physical integrity; Takes the view that the respect for human rights, democracy and the rule of law should be an integral part of the new comprehensive partnership and cooperation agreement.

Somalia

Greens/EFA motion for a resolution

The Greens/EFA Group condemns the stoning and execution of Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow, a 13 year old girl and calls on the Somali government to bring to justice those accused of raping her by due process. The Group calls on the international community to establish a commission of enquiry into this and other human rights abuses committed in Somalia.

Case of the al-Kurd family

The Greens/EFA Group condemns the eviction of the al-Kurd family and the recent destruction of houses of Palestinian families by the Israeli authorities in several areas of East Jerusalem; recalls that these operations are inhuman and are illegal under international law; calls the Israeli authorities to immediately put an end to settlement activities as well as to illegal evictions and house destructions in East Jerusalem.

Death penalty in Nigeria

Greens/EFA motion for a resolution

The Greens/EFA Group calls on the Federal Government of Nigeria and State Governments in Nigeria to abolish the death penalty and, pending abolition, to declare an immediate moratorium on all executions as provided by UN General Assembly resolution 62/149 and commute without delay all death sentences to terms of imprisonment.

The Greens/EFA Group strongly appeals to the military government of Burma to immediately release all political prisoners and to put an end to the detention of Aung San Suu Kyi; It denounces the arbitrary charges behind the arrests of many dissidents and the harsh conditions of detention of political prisoners including widespread use of torture and hard labour.

The Greens/EFA Group expresses its deep concern at the recent fighting which causes an immense suffering of civilian population including rape, indiscriminate killings, looting and illicit mining activities; Calls upon all parties to uphold their commitments to protect the civilian population and respect for human rights as outlined in the Goma peace agreement and the Nairobi Communiqué.

EU15 makes some progress towards Kyoto emissions targets

The EU15 (the 15 'old' EU member states) is making progress towards its greenhouse gas emissions reduction commitment under the Kyoto Protocol. However, a new report from the European Environment Agency shows significant use of external offsets will be necessary to ultimately meet the overall target.

International climate talks

Danish Climate Minister gives upbeat assessment of UNFCCC talks to EP climate committee

Danish climate minister Connie Hedegaard outlined the state of play in the international climate negotiations to the EP Climate Change committee. Despite slow progress, she gave an upbeat assessment but stressed the importance of a timely EU agreement on a strong Climate Package.

The Greens stress that serious concerns remain with regard to fundamental rights of freedom of assembly and expression, and access by voters to a plurality of views; Point out that, while the EU has welcomed the recent release of several democratic opposition activists and nurtured hopes for an improvement in organisation of arrangements for elections, persistent failure to organise free and fair elections will be a further set-back for Belarus.
