Human rights situation in Tunisia

Violations of human rights are commonplace in Tunisia. On the initiative of the Greens/EFA group, the European Parliament put the issue on the plenary agenda with a resolution adopted on 15 June.

EU-Russia relations

Bioenergy

The Energy Council met on 8-9 June to discuss and publish the Council's Conclusion on the EU's "Biomass Action Plan". Ahead of this meeting the European Parliament organized a public hearing on biomass and NGOs held a conference on sustainable biofuels.

Climate change affects million living in deserts

According to a new report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) the world's deserts are facing dramatic changes as a result of climate change and human exploitation like high water demands, tourism or salt contamination of irrigated soils.

UN Convention on Climate Change

The UN convention on climate change (UNFCC) talks in Bonn, Germany, ended last Friday, 26 May. The Kyoto protocol signatories agreed on a work plan in order to set post-2012 emission targets.

Television without Frontiers Directive

The "Television without Frontiers" Directive rests on two basic principles: the free movement of European television programmes within the internal market and the so called "broadcasting quotas" which commit the TV stations to reserve half of their broadcasting time for European works.

Global warming

A new study released yesterday shows that global climate change can set-off positive feedback loops in nature which amplify warming and cooling trends. Therefore temperatures may increase much more than current climate models are predicting it.
