UN climate summit

Yesterday around 150 countries took part in the one-day event, some 80 of them at the level of head of state and government, making it the most senior UN gathering ever on climate change. This unprecedented world summit was entitled "The Future in Our Hands: Addressing the Leadership Challenge of Climate Change."

Global warming

The sea ice that covers the North Pole and the Artic has shrunk by 1 million square kilometres over the past year. Images released by the European Space Agency (ESA) last week revealed this worrying impact of global warming.

Car emissions

According to a survey by the NGO "Transport & Environment" the emission rates of new cars produced by European carmakers were down by only 0.2% last year. It is the lowest performance on record.

UN climate negotiations

The negotiators from 158 countries reached basic agreement on rough targets to reduce the worldwide emissions of greenhouse gases. The UN climate conference concluded that industrialised countries should cut emissions by 25 to 40% of their 1990 levels by 2020.

Energy saving light bulbs

The European Commission decided yesterday not to end the import duties on energy saving light bulbs imported from China. The tariffs add up to 66% on the value of the imported bulbs! Once again the EU is not serious on energy efficiency and tackling climate change
