Nuclear power in Japan

A powerful earthquake shook Japan's northwestern coast this morning. It killed seven people, injured hundreds others and flattened scores of buildings. The quake affected also the world biggest nuclear power plant in Kashiwazaki with very serious consequences:a leak of radioactive water and a fire at the plant's electrical transformer .

Nuclear not a solution!

The fire took place at a nuclear reactor in Krümmel near Hamburg last Thursday. Contrary to previous reports by Vattenfall, the utility company which operates the nuclear plant, the fire did in fact affect the reactor.

Energy efficiency in the EU

The EU Directive on energy end-use efficiency and energy services requests all Member States to submit their first National Energy Efficiency Action Plan (NEEAP) to the Commission by June 30, 2007. Only 3 countries, Finland, Danemark and the UK, submitted their NEEAP until now!

Adaptation to climate change

The European Commission released today its Green Paper on adaptation to climate change. It stresses that climate change is already happening since Europe has warmed by almost 1°C over the past century. Adaptation to climate change is now an indispensable measure in complement to strong reductions of the greenhouse gas emissions.

Trade and climate change

In the framework of the own initiative report on "Trade and Climate Change" by Greens/EFA MEP Alain Lipietz, the International Trade committee of the European Parliament will hold a mini-hearing on this topic. It will take place on Wednesday 27 June from 5 to 7.30 am in the European Parliament.

Renewables and energy efficiency

A new analysis by the UN environment Programme (UNEP) reveals a boom in investment into renewables. The report says investment capital flowing into renewable energy climbed from $ 80 billion in 2005 to a record $ 100 billion in 2006. The UN body concludes that renewables could provide almost 25% of the world's electricity by 2030.
